In life, things very often get worse rather than better, but people wanted desperately to believe that a better future was in store for them.
Will this New Year see an end to the fighting in Iraq? Will it see peace and justice in Palestine? Will a cure be found for the world’s diseases? Will any of us get significantly better jobs or inherit a fortune? We don’t really believe that any of these things will realistically happen, but maybe the problem is not just that we don’t believe these things will happen, but that really we just don’t believe. Maybe in our hearts the fact is that we are too wearied by experience to accept that major change can happen in our world or can happen in our own lives. Too many of us have settled for the way things are. Comfortable with it or not, we think that things will always be that way.
Wishful thinking is for those without faith, for those who believe that many little gods can save them. Hoping that things might somehow get better is the desperate feeling of someone who doesn’t really believe that they will. True hope in the future comes to those who have a firm faith. For those who believe Allah is in control of all things, everything is possible, since nothing is beyond His scope. We read in the holy Qur’an in Surat Al-Baqarah:
“ The Originator of the heavens and the earth.
When He decrees a matter, he only says to it:
'Be' – And it is.”
Holy Qur’an 2:117
